A Hong Kong Giant Centipede – Scolopendra Subspinipes

Hong Kong Giant Centipede

This is Scolopendra Subspinipes, or better known simply as a Hong Kong Giant Centipede. During a stroll up the Central Green trail to Victoria Peak, I happened to notice this guy on the path. From what I’ve read you don’t want to be bitten by these. According to this Wikipedia entry – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scolopendra_subspinipes – this is the only known centipede that can cause death, and if it doesn’t kill you, it will cause swelling, pain, and other unfortunate symptoms.

My advice? Don’t get bitten by one of these. Lucky they don’t crawl all that fast so if you see one, you can not only get away from it in a few steps, if you’re feeling like damaging your karma, you could step on it. However I hear they can crawl under doors and fit into the tiniest holes, and they like to do that. People talk about finding them in their homes and apartments late at night. If you step on one be ready for the karmic aftermath.
